Ruben Day 33–the white noise

Interestingly, loud white noise can be very calming to infants, as it apparently simulates the sounds from inside the womb. We have a corny video about keeping newborns happy, and it actually contains one full hour of simulated womb noises to help calm babies…and it seems to work! Surprisingly, the simulation sounds oddly industrial–picture Nine Inch Nails. Who knew Trent Reznor held the secret to infant pacification…

Anyway, when that’s not available, I resort to my own technique– think Dumb and Dumber…

Speaking of making newborns happy… I love how they can change their mood in a nano-second. Ours will be wailing her little lungs out, completely angst ridden as if she were being physically tortured, and then, instantaneously she has a complete change of heart, as if to say… well…now that you are shaking a plastic rattle in my face, that changes everything. I’m going to be happy now. In fact, I’ll start to giggle so much that even you sleep deprived parents will snicker. But be careful… stop shaking that rattle, and its back to the high pitched torment for everyone.

Wouldn’t it be nice if that same rattle bit worked on grumpy grown-ups?

Ruben’s nickname should be Zoolander. In both day 25 ( when he looks at the cabinet), and day 33 (not looking at the camera), he cannot look right! he might have to spin around to look at the right side
